Sarah Guilmartin Soprano |
Born in Ireland, Sarah gained an honours degree in business studies from the Dublin Institute of Technology, before undertaking full time music performance studies at The Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. After migrating to Western Australia, Sarah undertook post graduate studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts under the tutelage of Patricia Price, graduating with a high distinction in March 2011.
While at WAAPA, Sarah performed roles in a number of opera scenes including Marguerite (Faust), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor), Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann), and Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus). She sang the soprano role in Michael Tippett's oratorio A Child of our Time and played both Sarah Whitehead and Princess Caraboo in Malcolm Williamson's opera English Eccentrics.
In 2010 Sarah won the Tinkler Encouragement Award as a semi-finalist in The Australian Singing Competition, and was a finalist in the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera and Arts Support Group Vocal Scholarship 2010. She also won both the Ladies Vocal Championship and the Mastersingers Guild Perpetual Trophy for most outstanding senior vocalist in the 2010 North Perth Music Festival.
Since making her operatic debut in the role of Pisana in Verdi's I due Foscari, Sarah's opera credits have included roles in Madama Butterfly, The Marriage of Figaro, L'elisir d'amore, La bohème, Tosca, Turandot, and Aida, all of which were performed with Lyric Opera Productions at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. She has also performed with Opera Ireland at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin, in both Dead Man Walking, and Turandot. Sarah was accepted into the Young Artists Development Programme with Opera Fringe 2008 (Downpatrick, Co. Down, Northern Ireland) and performed the role of Nella in the company's production of Gianni Schicchi.
Operetta credits include Phyllis in Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe, Casilida in The Gondoliers and Valencienne in Lehar's The Merry Widow.
Sarah has performed with West Australian Opera in productions of Die Fledermaus, The Tales of Hoffmann and The Pearl Fishers. In 2011, Sarah sang the soprano role in Rossini's Petite messe solennelle at St Georges Cathedral.
